CEDAR CITY — Heading into the latter part of October, the various high school fall sports are wrapping up their respective seasons.

Following are short recaps highlighting each of the fall sports in 3A/2A/1A classifications, with emphasis on Southern Utah schools.

3A football

There were two schools in the 3A football classification that finished their regular seasons undefeated with 10-0 records: the Juab Wasps and the Morgan Trojans. They will be respectively seeded No. 1 and 2 in the upcoming playoffs.

Joining them in earning first-round byes are No. 3 Grantsville (9-1) and Cedar City’s Canyon View High School (7-3), which got the fourth seed.

Canyon View will host a quarterfinal playoff game at 6 p.m. on Oct. 28, where the Falcons will face the winner of this week’s first-round game between No. 5 Richfield and No. 12 Carbon. Canyon View defeated both those teams in the final two games of the regular season, with the Falcons defeating Richfield 21-7 on Oct. 7 and shutting out Carbon the following week, 53-0.

2A football

In the 12-team 2A football classification, the top four seeds will all get first-round byes, while the other eight teams will play on Friday, Oct. 21 to see who advances to the quarterfinals. The top four seeds are, in order, South Summit, San Juan, Emery and Beaver.

In the only first-round game involving Southern Utah schools, No. 8 Delta will host in-county rival Millard, the ninth seed, with the winner advancing to play at unbeaten and top-ranked South Summit (10-0) the following week, on Oct. 28.

1A football

Even with an overall record of 10-0, the Enterprise Wolves still didn’t receive the top seed in the eight-team 1A state tournament. That distinction went to Layton Christian Academy, which ended its season with a higher RPI rating, despite having a 7-3 overall record.

Layton Christian will host No. 8 Parowan on Oct. 28. Meanwhile, second-seeded Enterprise will host No. 7 North Summit that same evening. And in the other two 1A quarterfinal matchups, No. 4 Milford (7-3) will host No. 5 North Sevier, while No. 3 Kanab (8-2) will host No. 6 Duchesne.

8-man 1A football

In the newly created eight-man 1A classification, top-seeded Gunnison Valley has a first-round bye, while the other seven schools will play first-round games at home sites on Oct. 28. Among them are No. 4 seed Water Canyon, which will host No. 5 Whitehorse, with the winner advancing to play Gunnison in the semifinals at SUU on Nov. 3

3A girls soccer

After Canyon View High School won the Region 12 championship with an 8-0 region record, the Falcons earned the No. 2 overall seed in the 3A state tournament and a first-round bye.

Canyon View then hosted a second-round playoff game on Oct. 12, where the Falcons defeated No. 15 Emery, 9-0.

That set up a quarterfinal contest on Oct. 15 against No. 7 seed Juan Diego. The game ended up being a defensive battle, with both teams locked in a scoreless tie throughout 80 minutes of regulation plus two 10-minute overtimes.

The Falcons took 15 shots on goal during the match, including at least a couple from just a few feet in front of the net, but could not convert any of them. Defensively, goalkeeper Gracie Burt made several crucial stops for the Falcons, including one penalty kick and a couple other free kicks.

But when the second overtime ended and the score was still tied 0-0, that meant the game would be decided on a penalty kick shootout.

Juan Diego kicked all five of its ensuing attempts into the net, but Canyon View had its fourth shot stopped by the goalkeeper, giving the Soaring Eagle the upset victory.

Canyon View coach Steven Newman said afterward that he and his players felt “gut punched” after the loss.

“We have really worked on finishing, but just didn’t,” Newman said. “I really thought one would go in. One always goes in.”

One bright spot for the Falcons is that they have just one senior that they’ll lose to graduation.

“It’ll be a long off-season, but we should be strong again next year,” Newman said.

2A girls soccer

The only remaining Southern Utah school in the 2A girls soccer tournament is No. 4 seeded Millard, which defeated American Prep West Valley 8-0 at Millard on Oct. 12. Then, on Saturday, Oct. 15, the Eagles hosted Maeser Prep in the quarterfinals and won, 4-1.

Millard next plays No. 1 seed St. Joseph in the 2A semifinals on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. at Juan Diego Catholic High School in Draper.

3A tennis

Canyon View’s No.1  doubles team of senior Amy Lee and sophomore Aliyah Hathaway, who were seeded ninth in the state tournament, first won their play-in match, then upset No. 8 Waterford to advance to the quarterfinals. They then lost to eventual champions Sydney Jensen and Ryann Jensen of Morgan High. Morgan also won the team state championship.

2A boys golf

Beaver won the 2A boys golf state title for the sixth straight year. Playing at Mountain View Golf Course in West Jordan on Oct. 5-6, the Beavers shot posted a team score of 600 over two days to finish 36 strokes ahead of runner-up Rowland Hall.
