CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — From flat tires and oil leaks to worn-out shocks and odd clunking sounds, a lot can go wrong with your vehicle. Backed by three generations of family ownership, Big O Tires is the name Southern Utahns trust to keep them on the road.

Big O has a long history of honest, friendly service and quality products. Rich Lewis and Loy Dobson brought the brand to Southern Utah in 1984, opening up their first shop on St. George Boulevard. Another St. George location on Bluff Street followed, along with a shop in Cedar City.

In 1992, Lewis asked his son-in-law, Mark Griffin, who was working in Salt Lake City at the time, to move south and work in the business as Big O Tires was beginning to grow and expand with the addition of a shop on Sunset Boulevard in St. George and a new location in Mesquite, Nevada.

Griffin bought out his father-in-law’s share of the business six years ago and Dobson’s in January, but their commitment to treating every customer and employee like family remains the driving force behind the operation. Many of their service technicians and salespeople have been with the company for a decade or more.

“Those two guys really started things and created the atmosphere for everybody to have the Big O feeling,” he said. “It’s been a wonderful ride.”

With Griffin as owner and his son, Nick, as general manager, Big O recently expanded their service area to Page, Arizona. Their seventh store, on State Street in Hurricane, opened in September.

Whether you need service or a new set of tires, Big O’s prices are the best in Southern Utah. Nick Griffin said they’ll meet or beat any quote a customer obtains in writing elsewhere. They also purchase as many products locally as possible.

“If you want to keep your money local, then Big O is the place to go,” he added.

Big O tires have the best warranty in the business, and the company stands behind their product. Customers can buy their tires in St. George and pull into any of Big O’s 460 locations across the country to have it repaired or replaced if something goes wrong. They also offer brakes, shocks, struts, alignments and oil changes.

Every shop has a sign that says “the team you trust,” a motto the Griffins live by every day. Mistakes happen and cars aren’t a perfect science, but customers can always count on the Big O team to make things right.

“Our service is second to none,” Mark Griffin said. “Our goal and what we strive for is to build a personal relationship with the people that walk through our doors.”

The people of Southern Utah have been good to Big O for the past 38 years, and they look forward to taking care of the community for the next 38 and beyond.

“We don’t plan on going anywhere,” Nick Griffin said. “The only thing we plan on doing is getting bigger and better.”
