Utah Tech University to host debates for Washington County Commission, Utah House candidates

ST. GEORGE — Citizens will have the opportunity to watch Washington County Commission and Utah State House of Representatives District 72 candidates share their campaign platforms as the Nov. 8 election draws near.

Candidate debates will take place Wednesday, 6-9 p.m., in the Dolores Doré Eccles Fine Arts Center Main Stage Theater on the Utah Tech University campus, according to a press release issued by Utah Tech. The event is sponsored by Utah Tech University’s Institute of Politics, the Washington County Debate Coalition and the St. George Area Chamber of Commerce,

The debates are open to the public, and the community is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The debates will be moderated by St. George News reporter and assistant editor Chris Reed.

The first debate will include Washington County Commission candidates Gil Almquist, Robert Ford, Victor Iverson, Chuck Goode, Adam Snow and Rebecca Winsor. The second debate will be between Joseph Ellison and Ila Fica, the candidates for the Utah State House of Representatives District 72 seat.

Each debate will last one hour, with a 30-minute intermission between the debates to allow the candidates to meet and greet the public.

“This is the second series of debates the coalition has sponsored,” Vince Brown, co-chair of the Washington County Debate Coalition, said in the news release. “It feels like political participation, competitive races and robust debate are all gaining momentum in this community. It makes me very proud of where I live to see citizens having meaningful interaction with their elected leaders.”
