CEDAR CITY — A severe thunderstorm that passed through northern Iron County on Sunday afternoon and evening brought hail and heavy rain to several areas.
Enoch City manager Rob Dotson told Cedar City News that the storm dumped nearly 2 inches of rain, along with accumulations of hail as deep as 6 inches in some locations.
“Some streets were almost full of water, as they are built to do,” Dotson said. “There were a few reports of water inside homes from overfilled rain gutters and property slopes. Compared to last year, there were very few and minor problems.”
Many local residents took to social media and posted photos and video clips of hail falling on their property. Most of the hailstones appeared to be the size of rock salt or pebbles but some were larger, almost golf ball-sized. Some people reported flooding in their yards or damage to their roofs or vehicles.
Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the area. The agency later tweeted saying the warning was being extended.
We have extended the Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the storm currently over Enoch. The public reports hail in excess of half dollar size. This storm is also producing gusty winds and very heavy rain that will cause areas of standing water. Do not drive into flooded roads! #utwx https://t.co/AnICpE6QpI
