Update Sept. 28, 9:30 a.m. Additional description of suspect as police stand down from manhunt but search for suspect continues.

Multiple police vehicles were seen in the area. Overhead, a local Utah Department of Public Safety Helicopter was also reportedly seen overhead in the area of the search.

In a message broadcast on Facebook, St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell said the search began after a moped with a male driver and a female passenger was stopped and the male fled.

“We have one female in custody and we’re looking for one male,” Mitchell said in the Facebook message.

The moped crashed on a nearby bike path and the man fled, leaving the female behind, police said.

The suspect is described as a white male of average build with darker hair, long gray basketball shorts, black tank top with Champion white lettering, black hat, black backpack wearing one white shoe.

After about an hour, the police stood down from the large search. By 9 a.m., the corner of River and Riverside was cleared of police vehicles and the DPS helicopter returned to St. George Airport.

“We’ve saturated the area without finding him,” Mitchell told St. George News. “So at some point, you scale back search and investigate through outher avenues.”

Mitchell added the suspect is not considered to be armed.
