Technology is always evolving, and so are skin rejuvenation treatments. Desert Sands Aesthetics & Laser proudly offers many energy-based laser skin therapies that can turn back the hands of time. Beyond providing cutting-edge procedures, Evans strives to educate patients to help them get the most out of every treatment.

“At Desert Sands Aesthetics & Laser, patient safety and optimal results are always our top priorities,” she said. “Proper skin prep is a key element to achieving the maximum benefits of any laser treatment.”

Laser treatments make your skin more vulnerable to the damaging effects of the sun. Avoiding sun exposure, tanning beds, spray tanning and self-tanning products for at least four weeks prior to and following your treatment is imperative. Otherwise, unwanted bronzing or darkening due to excessive light energy absorption may occur.

Having a tan also decreases the effectiveness of most laser treatments, Evans said. Darker skin will prevent some of the laser’s intensity from reaching its intended depth, as the light energy is absorbed too soon by the pigment it fires upon.

Patients should wear broad-spectrum sunscreen daily while avoiding the sun before and after treatment. Desert Sands Aesthetics & Laser carries zinc-based sunscreen from EltaMD. Zinc reflects and reduces the broadest range of UVA and UVB ultraviolet rays, helping to protect the skin against Southern Utah’s powerful sun. Evans also strongly recommends wearing a hat.

Hydration is essential to healthy skin, especially during laser treatments. Moisturize your skin in the morning and evening for seven days prior to your procedure, and drink at least eight glasses of water per day.

Avoid most facial procedures for four weeks before treatment, including chemical peels and dermabrasion. Don’t use exfoliating skin care products, such as retinols and glycolic acid, for one week prior.

To reduce the risk of bruising, persistent skin redness and delayed wound healing, patients are asked to stop taking fish oil, garlic, gingko biloba, flax oil, cod liver oil, vitamin A and vitamin E supplements for at least seven days before treatment. Aspirin, naproxen and ibuprofen, unless medically necessary, also should be avoided. Drinking alcohol, which can act as a blood thinner, is discouraged for four weeks prior to treatment and one week after.

Talk to your skin care provider at Desert Sands Aesthetics & Laser about your skincare routine and any concerns or questions that may arise. However, following these guidelines will significantly increase the efficacy and longevity of laser skin treatments.

“Proper skin condition equals better results, less risk, higher patient satisfaction and possibly less treatments required, which leads to greater savings,” Evans said.
