CEDAR CITY — In this week’s Region 10 boys golf match held Wednesday in Cedar City, the Desert Hills Thunder ended Crimson Cliffs’ season-long winning streak with a double-digit victory.
Playing at Cedar Ridge Golf Course, Desert Hills’ top four golfers posted a combined score of 295, a full 10 strokes better than runner-up Crimson Cliffs, which scored 305.
Leading the way for the Thunder was Brock Porter, who shot an even-par 72 to tie for first place individually. Also for the Thunder, Kilo Brown shot a 73, while teammates Matz Leavitt and Noah Christensen each shot 75.
Even the Thunder’s fifth- and sixth-place golfers shot in the 70s, with Boston Dixon carding a 77 and Jace Fillmore posting a 78.
“I thought we had a chance (to beat Crimson Cliffs),” Porter told St. George News afterward as he and his teammates posed for photos with their winning scoresheet. “I thought it would be tough, but we did it so we’re gonna go celebrate.”
As for his own even-par round, Porter said he “had to make a lot of 5-footers.”
“The greens are really hard,” he said. “I played really well. Just, it was tough … really windy and hard, but my team did great. I love them. They’re awesome.”
The golfers dealt with a variety of weather conditions over the course of the match, including heavy rains during the first few holes, with intermittent gusts of wind throughout the afternoon.
Crimson Cliffs played without one of its top players, Boston Bracken, who was competing in a two-man USGA tournament in northern Utah. Bracken is expected to be back with the team next week, Crimson coach Cody Felts said.
Leading the way for the Mustangs was Lincoln Markham, who shot a 72, tying with Porter for top individual medalist honors.
Also among the top five individual scorers for the day were Cedar’s Luke Barnes with a 73 and Hurricane’s Michael Stirland with a 74.
Host team Cedar High took third place with a score of 311, while Snow Canyon came in fourth with 330 strokes.
Next week’s Region 10 match is scheduled for Wednesday at Sky Mountain Golf Course in Hurricane.
