ST. GEORGE —A driver was killed and the passenger was transported to the hospital following a single-vehicle rollover on U.S. Route 89 in Kane County Monday night.
Shortly after 9:30 p.m., officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to a rollover on US Route-89 in Kane County involving a white Dodge Ram pickup truck that was found overturned off the shoulder of the roadway south of Kanab, according to a statement released by the Utah Highway Patrol early Tuesday morning.
The 38-year-old driver was killed in the crash, the report states, while the 48-year-old passenger sustained multiple injuries and was flown to an area hospital in stable condition.
At the time of the crash, the Dodge was heading west along US-89 when it drifted to the right near mile post 17 then continued off the roadway and rolled. The driver, who was not restrained by safety devices, was ejected from the vehicle in the process.
The pickup came to rest on its side with the driver’s side against the ground.
UHP troopers say that neither occupant was restrained at the time of the incident and impairment is being investigated as a possible contributor to the crash.
Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden said the investigation will likely take some time, since investigators are relying, in part, on the results of the toxicology tests once the analysis is completed that will help to determine if impairment played a role in the crash.
“The toxicology report is important, particularly in cases where the driver is deceased,” Roden said, adding it will likely take some time for investigators to receive the results.
He also confirmed that the passenger survived and remains in the hospital at this time. Authorities have yet to release the name of the driver.
This report is based on statements from police, emergency personnel or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
