ST. GEORGE — Commuters who go to and from St. George to Santa Clara on Sunset Boulevard will have a slower go for the work week. Those who access Sunset off Tuweap Drive will need to find a different route entirely.

Travel on Sunset Boulevard has been reduced to a single lane in each direction around the intersection of Tuweap Drive near Sand Hollow Aquatic Center. City work crews are performing maintenance on a water main underneath a portion of the road, according to the city of St. George’s Facebook page.

Work began Monday with the roadway slated to reopen Friday should all go according to plan.

Motorists who usually access Sunset Boulevard from Tuweap Drive will need to go east on 1140 North from Tuweap Drive and then turn south 2100 West as shown on the map included in this advisory.

Those needing to access Tuweap by way of Sunset Boulevard can take the reverse course by going north on 2100 West and then east on 1400 North until they hit Tuweap Drive.

As the detour goes through residential neighborhoods, St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell said motorists need to be mindful of their surroundings and keep to the speed limit. As it may be an unfamiliar route for many, she also said some motorists may initially feel rushed and distracted while getting to the area.

“Just plan ahead and channel your inner patience,” Mitchell said.

The same advice applies to those who will be driving by the work zone on Sunset Boulevard, she said.

As travel will be reduced to a single lane in either direction, paying attention to your driving and not attempting to race through the work zone is encouraged. Responding to a call reporting someone hitting a city worker or rear-ending a car due to distraction or other factors is something the police would like to avoid, Mitchell said.

The act of speeding in a construction zone can also be subject to double fines, she added.
