ST. GEORGE —An all-terrain vehicle crash at Toquerville Falls Saturday night led to a life flight and ambulance transfer with critical injuries for one adult and one child.

Sgt. Joel Hafoka with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a call around 7:45 p.m of an ATV crash at Toquerville Falls.  A seven-year-old boy and his 38-year-old mother, both from California, had sustained injuries.

At the scene, Deputy Graham Hancock said blood was found on others, which was determined to be from the boy and not additional injuries. A language barrier also contributed to the chaos of the scene.

The seven-year-old was taken by life flight to St. George Regional Hospital, while the mother was escorted by search and rescue to an ambulance, where she was transferred to SGRH.

“They took some life-saving measures in-route and were able to get him the medical care that was needed to get him moving forward,” Hancock said about the boy. “The mother was able to get out of the side by side by herself and was transported.”

Witnesses at the scene stated the mother and son were riding together when they struck a rock, throwing them off balance and rolling the ATV. The crash is currently under investigation.

“As far as I know the son is doing well, obviously it’s still touch-and-go, but as far as I know, he’s doing much better,” Hancock said.

This report is based on statements from police and may not contain the full scope of findings.
