ST. GEORGE — Weather events continue to make the news in Southern Utah.

And several St. George News readers have been instrumental in enhancing coverage by sharing photos, videos and comments about what they see and what they capture, most of the time on their cell phones.

Cya Crane and her boyfriend Nick Saidi of Ivins are two such examples. The couple was “just sitting in the garage enjoying the weather” on Sunday evening. The time was 5:52 p.m. – and then, she had a thought.

“I decided to take out my phone hoping to capture something out of the crazy storm,” Crane wrote in an email to St. George News.

Crane used her iPhone 12 to capture video of the event, which featured brilliant lightning. Crane said Saidi was able to screenshot the frame of the video that recorded the intense bolt of lightning.

The result was an image of a multi-prong lightning strike.

“It’s absolutely amazing what Mother Nature can do and very rare to capture something so amazing on video or even a photo,” Crane also wrote in her email. “I had to try to get something. We don’t get many storms here. It’s been very dry over the last few years and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to capture something so amazing.”

Dust devil hits St. George neighborhood Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2022 | Photo extracted from video by Paul Habel, St. George News

Paul Habel found himself in the right place at the right time Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. when a dust devil blew through his St. George neighborhood, across the street from his home. The resulting video shows a large dust devil pounding trees and spreading dust in a somewhat alarming fashion.

Habel said in an email to St. George News that the weather event took him by surprise.

“out on the front porch when everything was still when all (of a) sudden the trees started to make sounds from the extreme wind and then the bowl of wind mixed with dust  … was headed our way … was pretty cool,” Habel wrote.

Last week, readers captured both a moonbow and landspout – on the same day – and shared their video and images with St. George News. These readers are among the many who have contributed throughout the years.

St. George News remains thankful for this generosity.
