CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — The summer cohorts at Dixie Technical College are coming up for various health care sciences programs. These include medical assisting, nursing assistant and practical nursing, as well as a brand new program in biotechnology.

Medical assisting

Medical assisting is a great career for those who love the medical field and interacting with patients. Medical assistants take on a vital role in every medical office, whether they specialize in front office or back office, to support every aspect of a practice, making them a valuable member of the team.

The next medical assisting cohort begins on Aug. 15, with daytime classes being held Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Nursing assistant

The nursing assistant program prepares students for entry into professional nursing as a CNA. This is the gateway through which anyone interested in a nursing career must pass. Kindness and compassion are unstated prerequisites for the program, which is fast-paced with lots of hands-on learning opportunities. There are currently over 100 job openings in Washington County alone for nursing assistants.

There are several upcoming nursing assistant cohorts. An evening class begins Aug. 15 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-7 p.m. Also starting Aug. 15 is the AM STEM cohort for high school students only. Those classes will meet Monday through Thursday from 7:30-9 a.m.

On Aug. 23, an accelerated cohort begins Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. And for the first time ever, Dixie Tech is offering a hyper-accelerated four-week cohort to begin Oct. 24 and meet Monday through Friday from 4:30-9:30 p.m.

Practical nursing

The practical nursing program prepares students to take the NCLEX exam to become a licensed practical nurse. Licensed practical nurses are in high demand in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, care and rehabilitation facilities, home health and hospice. A vital member of the nursing team, the practical nursing license is also the next step in the celebrated progression of nursing.

The next practical nursing cohort begins Oct. 3 as an evening class. A CNA certificate is required to enroll in this program.

Biotechnology

This brand-new, cutting-edge field explores the intersection of technology and living things. This includes discovering better ways to deliver medicine, creating better treatments, understanding lab techniques, improving nutritional supplements, using technology to aid in rehabilitation or even working towards creating artificial limbs.
