At approximately 9:35 a.m, the 68-year-old driver was driving downhill in an Atrium motor home while hauling a boat on a trailer. At this time, Brian Head Deputy Marshal Jared Burton said the vehicle’s brakes failed due to overuse and the man lost control of his vehicle.

The driver pulled onto the runaway truck ramp near mile marker 12, causing the vehicle to jackknife, Utah Highway Patrol trooper Eddie Wright said.

The boat was forced off the trailer and into the back of the motor home. The driver reportedly sustained injuries after hitting the steering wheel “really hard,” and was transported via ambulance to Intermountain Cedar City Hospital, Burton said.

No citations were issued at the scene, Wright said.

Burton said drivers should gear down when traveling downhill to avoid similar crashes and noted that SR 143 is not recommended for trailers of any kind.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers and Brian Head Public Safety officers responded to the incident.
