CEDAR CITY — A driver turning left collided with an eastbound sedan at the 1150 West and 200 North intersection Thursday afternoon, resulting in minor injuries.

The collision involved a silver Lexus LS, turning left off 1150 West and a red Toyota Prius traveling east on 200 North, Cedar City Police Cpl. Eric Heaps said. Both vehicles contained a single occupant.

Heaps was the first to respond to the scene and called it in at approximately 1:37 p.m. after noticing a “debris field” on the road. The evidence indicated that the Lexus driver reportedly failed to yield to oncoming traffic and collided with the Toyota. The Lexus driver was cited for failure to yield.

Because both vehicles were able to pull off the road, no lanes were closed, Heaps said.

The female driver in the Toyota reportedly had a nosebleed, which was considered an airbag-related injury. Heaps said she was evaluated by Gold Cross personnel but was not transported to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.

“She was actually in pretty good shape for a pretty good impact,” he said.

Heaps said 200 North’s speed limit was recently lowered to 35 mph due to the staggered intersections found on both sides of the street.

“And people are kind of learning to drive slower,” he said.

Poor visibility is a common reason that angle impacts, also called T-bone collisions occur, as cars closer to the driver attempting to turn could block their view of vehicles in other lanes, Heaps said. Collisions are also sometimes caused by drivers who are “in a hurry,” he added.

“My advice to drivers is that if they ever feel pressure (to go), remember they can wait all day long if they have to.’

The Utah Highway Patrol also responded to the call.
