ST. GEORGE — A two-vehicle collision at the intersection of River Road and Riverside Drive caused midday traffic delays in St. George on Thursday.

The incident, which happened shortly before noon, involved a silver Toyota RAV4 SUV and an orange Dodge pickup truck.

St. George Police Officer Tiffany Mitchell said the driver of the Toyota was in the left turn lane facing east on Riverside Drive when he turned in front of the Dodge, which was heading westbound straight through the intersection.

“The silver SUV failed to yield on a left-turn yellow signal and turned in front of the orange truck,” Michell told St. George News at the scene.

The Toyota driver sustained abrasions on his head and face, along with other injuries. He declined to be transported via ambulance and was instead taken from the scene in a private vehicle to receive medical attention.

The man driving the Dodge did not report any injuries, said Mitchell, adding that both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.

The Toyota driver received a citation for failure to yield, Mitchell added. Neither vehicle had any other occupants besides the driver.

Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage, with multiple airbags deployed in both.

Traffic in the vicinity of this busy intersection was impacted for about one hour while the scene was cleared.

Eric Trombley, a St. George Police motorcycle patrol officer who was helping direct traffic through the intersection, said motorists should remember what a yellow light means.

“I guess the hardest part of it is people just understanding that the yellow light doesn’t mean hurry up and get out of the intersection,” he said. “It means, make sure it’s clear so that you can finish and go through the intersection.

“They don’t always pay attention, and they’re also trying to do the same thing.”

This report is based on information provided by law enforcement and may not contain the full scope of findings.
