HURRICANE — Four teens were taken to the hospital Wednesday evening after the truck they were riding in veered off state Route 7 and rolled down an embankment.

The Utah Highway Patrol, along with Hurricane City Police and Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue, responded to reports of the rollover around 6:25 p.m. They found three of the teens had been ejected from the truck as it rolled while the fourth, the driver, remained in place due to her wearing a seat belt, UHP Trooper Grant Hintze said at the scene.

Details of what caused the crash are currently unknown, Hintze said, but related that witnesses said the truck – a large, white GMC with an extended cab – was eastbound on SR-7 and started to serve across the road a couple of times.

In the area of 3200 West, the truck veered toward the embankment, then got back onto the road, then swerved again and rolled two to three times down the embankment before coming to a stop on its side.

Two of the passengers, one girl and one boy, who have been thrown from the truck appeared to have broken bones, Hintze said, adding he was unable to determine the extent or severity of their injuries.

Three of the teens were alert and responsive at the scene, Hintze said. All four were loaded into ambulances and taken to St. George Regional Hospital for medical evaluation and care.

“We’re treating this as serious (injury-wise) as a precaution,” he said, “but we’re hoping for the best.”

Witnesses and bystanders that saw the crash rushed to the teens’ aid and helped where they could until first responders arrived, Hintze said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation as the occupants of the GMC had yet to be asked about the crash, Hintze added.
