Blinding sun leads to 3-car crash at intersection of 2450 South and River Road

ST. GEORGE — Three cars were banged up and had to be towed Tuesday evening shortly after 8 p.m. when a blinding sun caused a driver to miss a red light.

St. George police officer William De Hart told St. George News that a gray Honda passenger vehicle was headed northbound on River Road. The light at the intersection of River Road and 2450 South was red, De Hart said.

“Due to the position of the sun, the driver couldn’t see the red light and proceeded into the intersection,” De Hart said.

East and westbound traffic on 2450 South had a green light, said De Hart, adding that a white Mercedes SUV was headed east through the intersection and a black Toyota 4-Runner was going west.

“As the Honda entered the intersection, it struck the 4-Runner on the side,” De Hart said, “which spun it out into the Mercedes.”

De Hart reported that a juvenile passenger inside the 4-Runner suffered an airbag-related injury and was evaluated on-scene. The juvenile suffered only minor injuries and did not go to the hospital.

Two Gold Cross Ambulances were on scene along with members of the St. George Police Department and St. George Fire Department. None of the passengers or drivers in the incident went to the hospital, De Hart said.

De Hart said that the driver of the Honda was cited for failing to obey a traffic signal as well as for a learner’s permit violation.

The three vehicles were towed and the intersection cleared in a little less than an hour and normal traffic flow resumed.

This report is based on statements by police personnel and may not contain the full scope of the findings.
