CEDAR CITY – Irrigators in the Cedar City area are being asked to conserve water after City Council approved a new Voluntary Water Irrigation Restriction Schedule on April 13 .
According to a news release, Resolution No. 22-041301 requests “the community’s help to limit culinary water use for irrigating.” Voluntary participation would be based on house address as follows:
- Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays – Even-numbered addresses shall water before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
- Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays – Odd-numbered addresses shall water before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
- No irrigation on Sundays
This effort has been made to get ahead of the dry, summer months and is one of the many ways Cedar City is encouraging conservation to address the region’s water crisis, the news release said.
“Our community is known for coming together when times are tough,” Cedar City Water Division Superintendent Robbie Mitchell said in a news release. “We are looking for voluntary participation in this effort to conserve water on your scheduled day, which will give our basins more time to fill up every week.”
This schedule applies to all who use culinary water, including city facilities, and is effective immediately through Sept. 30. Exemptions to this resolution include city facilities, public facilities and individuals who utilize secondary water for irrigation purposes. The Cedar City Water Division may grant an exemption to those who have planted new sod or seed for a two-week period from the date of planting. The new voluntary restriction schedule is in addition to the annual mandatory irrigation restrictions per City Ordinance 37-7.1, restricting culinary water use between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., which is not optional and is enforced by officials through Oct. 31.
The city will implement a marginal rate increase July 1 for both industrial and residential culinary water users. After nearly 10 years with no rate increases, the tiered rate increase structure is also meant to encourage conservation by rewarding those who use less water with a lower bill each month, according to the news release.
