ST. GEORGE — Boston Bracken, a 16-year-old sophomore at Crimson Cliffs High School, was among the top finishers at the U.S. Open Local Qualifier golf tournament staged at Provo’s Riverside Country Club on Monday.
Bracken shot a 4-under-par 68 to tie for third place in the event, thereby securing a spot in the upcoming sectional qualifier to be held at The Olympic Club in San Francisco in early June.
Bracken shot a 34 on the front nine with three birdies and one bogey, then duplicated the feat on the back nine. He was one of two teenagers to make the top five, joining Lone Peak High School junior Cooper Jones, who also shot a 68 on Monday. The 18-hole tournament featured more than 80 of the state’s top golfers, with only the top five players qualifying for sectionals.
“I’m so excited to compete for a spot in the U.S. Open,” Bracken told St. George News via text message on Wednesday. “It’s a dream of mine, and really cool to be doing this as a Junior golfer.”
