For the last 23 years, the Dixie Power Kite Festival has promoted literacy in Southern Utah with its reading programs and donations to the Washington County School District Foundation. The festival has always been committed to helping children become better readers, and this latest donation is another example of that dedication.

“This year’s festival was a great success, and the largest donation ever was made to the foundation in support of its literacy initiatives,” Schofield said.

It’s been said that literacy is the key to success in school and life. That’s why the Washington County School District Foundation is so appreciative of the $75,000 donation they received. The funds will be used to improve literacy levels in Washington County schools. With better literacy comes better grades, higher test scores and more confident students.

There are many ways to improve literacy, including providing quality books, training teachers in effective reading instruction and moving children from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” The foundation is committed to using the donated funds to make a real difference in the lives of Washington County students.

Donating money toward literacy programs is an investment in the future of the community. Strong literacy skills lead to better grades, higher test scores and increased graduation rates. In addition, literate adults are more likely to be employed and earn higher incomes. They are also more likely to vote, volunteer and participate in their communities.

“By helping children develop strong reading and writing skills, we set them up for success in school and in life,” Schofield said.

In addition to providing financial support, Dixie Power also donates thousands of man-hours to set up equipment, give out redemption prizes and clean up after the event.

“From setting up tents to giving out kites, the kite festival would not be possible without the hundreds of volunteers who donate their time and energy each year,” Schofield said. “Their hard work and dedication are greatly appreciated by all who attend the festival, and they are a vital part of making the event a success.”

Ludlow added a message of gratitude to all of this year’s festival sponsors.

“Without your support, we would not be able to donate $75,000 to the WCSD Foundation,” she said. “We are so grateful to have such caring businesses in our community. Thank you for everything you do to help make our world a better place.”
