ST. GEORGE — A driver trying to speed past another on Interstate 15 between Toquerville and Kanarraville sideswiped it, sending both vehicles over a cable barrier and leaving three injured, an officer said.
Shortly before 10:30 a.m., the crash took place at mile marker 39 near the Black Ridge and Kolob Canyons I-15 exits. According to the Utah Department of Transportation, both sides of I-15 were slowed with the left fast lane of the southbound side blocked until about noon.
Sgt. Joe Pastor with the Utah Highway Patrol said the incident involved a white 2000 Chevy impala and a gray 2019 Nissan Kick that were both traveling on northbound I-15.
“The Impala was traveling in excess of the speed limit trying to pass on the left. It sideswiped the Nissan and both cars went over the cable barrier,” Pastor said.
While the Chevy came to a rest in the median, the Nissan tumbled end-over-end into the fast lane of the southbound side. A male passenger was ejected.
The male had several broken bones and was transported to St. George Regional Hospital. Two other females in the Nissan suffered more superficial injuries, said Pastor, and were taken to Cedar City Hospital.
As for the male driver of the Chevy, the sole passenger of his vehicle, he wasn’t injured but may still face the consequences of the crash.
“It’s still under investigation but we’re looking at possible impaired driving,” Pastor said.
Along with the UHP, the New Harmony Fire Department responded to the incident.
