WASHINGTON CITY — Cedar High School’s boys and girls track teams each took first place at the Region 10 championship meet staged at Crimson Cliffs High School on Wednesday and Thursday.
Although the Cedar girls won by a comfortable 18-point margin over runner-up Desert Hills, the Cedar boys edged Snow Canyon by just a single point, 117-116.
With the state meet just over a week away, several athletes from all seven Region 10 schools recorded notable marks.
“There were so many great performances all around on both sides, girls and boys,” said Cedar coach Greg Harris. “It was good to see them so excited about their events and for their teammates’ success as well.”
Among the key highlights for the Reds was senior Seth Sonerholm winning the 800-meter run in a time of 1:54.81, which his coach said is a new PR for him as well as the fastest 4A time in the state this year. Sonerholm won the race by more than five seconds, with Carson Wall of Desert Hills taking second in 1:59.98.
In addition, Cedar junior Logan Peel won the boys 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:25.98, while sophomore teammate Ammon York won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 40.73 seconds.
Also for Cedar boys, junior Dallan DeMille won the discus with a throw of 146 feet.
For the Cedar girls, senior Carissa Hofeling placed highly in three distance races, winning the 3,200-meter run, taking third in the 1,600 and placing fourth in the 800. Two of the runners that finished ahead of Hofeling in the 800 were her own teammates; sophomores Anna Hall and Mayce Dalton placed first and second, respectively, while Dixie’s Ruby Ludlow took third.
Cedar’s Kiara Hansen and Quincy Esplin finished a respective first and second in the girls shot put, with both having top marks exceeding 35 feet. Those same two athletes also were the meet’s top two discus throwers, with Esplin winning with a mark of 118 feet, 8.5 inches and Hansen coming in second at 110 feet, 6 inches.
