Letter to the Editor: Let’s build an ice hockey arena in St. George

OPINION — My husband likes to play ice hockey. He has to drive to Las Vegas or to Salt Lake to play. He is 84!

I wonder why we don’t have an ice rink arena right here in St. George or somewhere in Washington County. We are the area where outdoor sports are loved, and there are many places to play soccer, baseball, pickleball, et cetera.

Why not ice hockey? Ice skating is such a popular activity that it is a shame our young people are unable to learn to ice skate, play hockey or figure skate. Our community is so sports-oriented that I know they would love to come and watch a hockey game of our local youth or adults or seniors, like my husband.

When we go to Las Vegas, it is so exciting to see little children, even as young a 3, learning to skate and play ice hockey. These little girls and boys are all decked out in hockey uniforms and trying to be like the pros. It’s precious to see. I would love to see that here.

I’m sure is has to do with money.

I’m sure there is someone in our area who could donate a piece of land for an arena to be built on. I’m sure there are people here with money that could contribute to the building of an arena and leave a legacy to future generations. Maybe for their own grandkids.

There may be a Wayne Gretzky in our area who will never know he can be a Wayne Gretzky because he never got the chance to learn to ice skate.

Maybe one of our city governments can make that happen.

I hope this puts a bug into some of your ears and if you have the desire, please do all you can to make that happen.
