‘Reconnect with yourself’: St. George woman opens business offering sound and light therapies

ST. GEORGE — When it comes to healing physical and mental ailments at Trinity Wellness, it’s about frequency.

Katie Mitchell, owner and founder of Trinity Wellness, told St. George News that her business grew out of her own healing journey. Growing up in a conventional background, where there was a “pill for an ill,” she said she never really thought for herself when it came to health and wellness.

She said she ended up in a place where she had what she now believes were preventable chronic health challenges and what some people might consider autoimmune disorders and chronic fatigue syndrome.

“The issue was that my bloodwork was always great, but I didn’t feel great,” she said.

The beginning of the journey began 13 years ago when Mitchell’s mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died from the prognosis only two years later at the age of 57. Having had a very close relationship with her mother, she said she pictured her mom living forever, much like her grandmother, who lived into her 90s.

At the time of her mother’s death, Mitchell, who had just had her first child, who was 9 months old, said her world flipped upside down. At that point, she experienced somewhat of an identity crisis between her mother’s death and taking on the role of a full-time, stay-at-home mom, when before this, she was used to working outside of the home. Over the next year, she said she held in her feelings and used food to cope, resulting in significant weight gain.

“I just got to the point where enough was enough,” she said. “I was tired of not feeling good. I was afraid of getting cancer myself … . My way of dealing with fear was to educate myself, empower myself with knowledge.”

Knowing she wanted to be there for her kids and her future grandchildren, she dove into research on cancer in hopes of finding a way to prevent it. And during this holistic journey, she said she began to learn that her body actually wanted to heal itself.

She also found herself committing to weight loss and even became a health coach.

A little under two years ago, she and her family moved across the country from Pennsylvania to Utah. At that time, she said she had gotten to a place where her health was drastically improving. But shortly after moving to Utah, in December 2020, she was driving with all her children in the van and got in a collision, she said, a traumatizing event for everyone.

After the crash, she said, many of her previous health issues were reactivated.

But also during that time, a friend posted information about a crystal light mat on Instagram. When she saw the cost of purchasing a mat herself, she asked her doctor if there was a facility in town that offered the usage of crystal light mats. While the doctor didn’t know of a facility in town, he did have another patient who recently purchased one.

She was able to go lie down on the crystal light mat that also included a vibroacoustic mat, which she had never heard of before.

“After only 15 minutes I got to a point where I get after an hour massage,” she said. “Not awake – not asleep, and I had to learn more about this.”

Though she had the original idea to create a business out of sound and light therapy, she said she ultimately put it on a back shelf, in fear of not being able to accomplish it, referring to “imposter syndrome.”

Then in October, she became ill with COVID-19 and said she felt more sick and scared than ever before.

“I was at rock bottom at that point, then I had the neatest experience,” she said. “I took some good supplements, and by the following week, I went from feeling the sickest I’d ever felt to the best I’ve ever felt in my life. I’ve never felt so grateful.”

With all the information and knowledge Mitchell had gathered, she said she knew she couldn’t keep it to herself. And then one day later that month, she had a moment of clarity that continued for two weeks, during which she knew what her mission was, what her business would be called, the date it would open and even wrote her mission statement at 3:30 a.m., she said.

She said she attributes this experience to both divine intervention and a weeklong yoga challenge at Be Hot Yoga, where she completed 20 classes in 7 days.

Roughly 100 days after this moment of clarity, on Feb. 4, she officially opened Trinity Wellness

“Opening this business has taught me so much about myself, about life,” she said. “I love what I do here. It’s so fulfilling and I feel it’s my life’s purpose. My whole life set me up for this.”

Trinity Wellness experience

Trinity Wellness offers different modalities of sound and light therapy combinations and operates on the premise that bodies are made of energy and operate at certain frequencies. Mitchell said there are things that pull this energy out of balance, such as toxins in food, air and thoughts, as well as stressful situations or trauma.

“Our body always wants to be in balance and homeostasis, and that’s what the sound and light mats help you do,” Mitchell said. “While taking sound at a low frequency, which is barely audible, and applying it directly to the body, it allows healing to occur.”

While each experience is based on the intention of the subject, Mitchell said lying on the mats allows people to quiet the noise, go inward and connect with themselves. She said she has seen many experience physical healing, along with improved sleep and emotional healing and clarity.

Each of the rooms at Trinity Wellness are named after local geological wonders, such as Zion and Bryce Canyon. Two of the rooms at Trinity Wellness offer vibroacoustic therapy, a more gentle experience of vibration, while the Pine Valley room offers the ‘cocoon experience’ with much higher vibrations. The other two rooms feature a Zion Mat layered with a mat containing 15 pounds of crushed amethyst.

Amethysts are healing on their own, she said, but when heated up, they create negative ions and infrared light that can penetrate up to 8 inches, twice as deep as using a sauna’s. There’s also an additional quantum energy mat, which has infrared properties and built-in electromagnetic frequency protection.

“You’re kind of almost in a protected bubble when you’re in these beds,” she said. “On top of that, you have headphones on and (are) listening to binaural beats.”

Sometimes the left and right sides of the brain operate independently, she said, adding that binaural beats sync both sides of the brain while also putting the listener into a relaxed, regenerative, meditative brainwave pattern.

“During this experience, you’re disconnecting from everything else in order to reconnect with yourself,” Mitchell said.

When asked about the name and brandmark for Trinity Wellness, Michell said as trinity means three, the logo for the business includes a lotus flower, which has three leaves. She said both the “T” and the “W” are present within the lotus flower’s leaves, with three stars above it, representing the healing power of nature and the circle representing never-ending journeys and the interconnectedness within humanity.

“I know if I need this, other people do, too,” she said. “I see how our culture and our society are so fast-paced. We’re just trying to be super mom and super dad and super person – whatever. (We’re) just keeping up with so much.”
