Vista Healthcare Neurology is led by Dr. Bob Niemann, a practicing neurologist since 1982 and a firm believer in the importance of patient-physician relationships.

“We’re a patient-driven practice,” he said. “Word-of-mouth is what makes a practice. If somebody likes you and likes what you do, they’re going to tell other people.”

Neurology encompasses the treatment and management of disorders of the brain and nervous system. At Vista Healthcare Neurology, Niemann and his support staff address a broad base of conditions including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

These diseases often overlap with rheumatology services at Vista Healthcare as well as conditions treated by the group’s pain physicians. Niemann said he frequently collaborates with colleagues in other specialties to care for patients as effectively as possible.

Additionally, Niemann treats patients with neurological damage as a result of a traumatic brain injury or stroke. Stroke is the third most common cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. He sees many patients with various forms of neuropathy, which he said is to be expected given Southern Utah’s large retirement-age population.

Vista Healthcare also treats the full spectrum of headache disorders, including migraines. Headaches are a specialty of Niemann’s for reasons close to his heart.

“I’ve had migraines my whole life and it runs in my family, so I empathize with people who have it,” he said. “People who haven’t experienced it don’t realize how disabling it can be.”

Niemann spent his entire medical career in Texas before relocating to Southern Utah to join Vista Healthcare Neurology. He attended medical school and completed his neurology residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, followed by a residency in internal medicine at the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple, Texas. He is certified by the American Board of Neurology.

Niemann said he was drawn to Vista Healthcare because its care model enables him to spend more hours with patients and fewer hours doing paperwork. And for the first time in his decades-long career, he will focus mainly on providing outpatient services.

Like most fields of medicine, neurology is continually evolving. For instance, Niemann said more treatments for migraine and more drugs for MS are available to patients today than ever before. New breakthroughs in genetics are revealing previously unknown associations between diseases.

“Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from making mistakes,” he said. “You learn from the past and continue to improve.”

Niemann witnessed some of the first CT scanners, now a common diagnostic tool, being used in neurology at the beginning of his career. Despite rapid technological advances, he said that much of neurology is still based on the physical. Emphasizing patient care as the core value of his practice, he strives to respect the trust of every patient and communicate clearly.

“The old saying is that if you listen long enough, the patient will tell you what’s wrong with them,” he added. “I try to listen.”
