ST. GEORGE — Two motorcycle riders were pronounced dead on Sunday following a crash on Old Dixie Highway 91 in Washington County after a passenger car reportedly crossed over the median and struck the bike head-on.
At 4:30 p.m. Sunday, a two-vehicle crash was reported near mile marker 16 on Old Dixie Highway 91 involving a Honda passenger car with a single occupant and a Harley Davidson motorcycle carrying two riders.
Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Mike Alexander told St. George News that both motorcycle riders were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda was flown to St. George Regional Hospital in critical condition.
At the time of the crash, Alexander said, the Harley was traveling south on Highway 91 when a northbound Honda crossed over the median and struck the motorcycle head-on, which threw the riders from the bike.
The impact of the crash killed both riders and left the driver of the Honda with critical injuries, he said. Shortly after the crash, the highway was shut down, and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office turned over the investigation to UHP to conduct the accident reconstruction and investigation.
Alexander said he was unable to gather any further details or photos on Sunday, being that cell service from the scene was very poor.
Impairment may have been a factor in the crash, Alexander added, but those findings are still preliminary only, as the investigation is still ongoing.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Utah Highway Patrol, Santa Clara-Ivins Police Department, Santa Clara-Ivins Fire Department, Mohave County Sheriff’s Office and Intermountain Life Flight responded and assisted with the scene.
