ST. GEORGE — The Snow Canyon boys and the Desert Hills girls were the respective team winners at the Desert Hills Invitational track meet on Saturday.

The single-day event attracted athletes from more than two dozen high schools, mostly from Southern Utah, including all seven Region 10 schools.

In the boys’ meet, Snow Canyon finished with 155 team points, while Desert Hills came in a distant second place with 96. The next four placing teams were all Region 10 schools, with Pine View taking third, followed by Cedar, Hurricane and Dixie. See team point totals in results listed below.

Among the top performances was Snow Canyon sophomore Trevor Gough, who won both hurdles events and placed fourth in the long jump. Gough won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.05 seconds, just four-tenths of a second ahead of fellow Snow Canyon sophomore Semaj Thompson.

In the 300 hurdles, Gough won with a time of 40.11 seconds, while Thompson placed third in 42.25. Finishing in between them was Cedar sophomore McKoy Smith, who finished in 42.12.

Gough said after a “rough start” in the 110s, he concentrated on his form, an essential facet in succeeding at this event.

“Once you get over that first hurdle, you just power through those steps,” Gough said. “For this one, it’s about hurdle form, staying low and having that power after the step again.

“But in the other (300) hurdle race, it’s all about having that stride in between and just making sure you have those steps. I like doing the 110 better; it’s more exciting, but my better time is in the 300.”

As the season progresses, Gough said his focus will be to continue to improve and possibly medal at the state meet, which will be May 19-21 in Provo.

“I want to make podium at state,” Gough said. “That’s a big goal.”

Meanwhile, on the girls’ side, Desert Hills finished with a winning total of 91 points, while Cedar and Pine View tied for second place with 68.5 points apiece. The event that resulted in a split point was the shot put, where Pine View freshman Tea Wright and Cedar sophomore Kiara Hansen tied for third place, each making a top throw of 33 feet, 7 inches.

The Desert Hills girls saw strong performances by several athletes, including junior sprinter Kooper Dennison, who won the 200-meter dash and placed second in the 100-meter dash; senior Madison George, who placed a respective fifth and seventh in those same two events, in addition to taking third in the 100 hurdles; and senior Sa’de Turlington, who placed second in the javelin with a throw of 113 feet, 8 inches.
