Region 10 baseball: Mustangs unbeaten; Flyers, Thunder also pick up sweeps

ST. GEORGE — The race for the Region 10 baseball title is tightening up after three local teams won on the road Friday.

Crimson Cliffs defeated Snow Canyon twice in one week and Dixie and Desert Hills also posted sweeps in their home-and-home tilts this past week.

Following are recaps of this week’s action on the diamond.

Crimson Cliffs 7, Snow Canyon 1 | Crimson Cliffs 8, Snow Canyon 4

The Mustangs swept the defending 4A state champs after scoring 15 runs in two games.

In the contest at Crimson Cliffs Tuesday night, Beau Sampson pitched the Mustangs to the win while Ethan Anderson suffered the loss for the Warriors.

“That’s a tough team,” Crimson Cliffs coach Justin Abbott told St. George News after the game. “I love the way our boys competed on the mound and at the plate. Defensively we did a really good job.”

Ty Maynard and Trey Evans both doubled in the game. Maynard drove in two runs and Evans had one RBI. Logan West also picked up an RBI for Crimson Cliffs.

Hayden Smith hit a solo homerun for Snow Canyon. Jake Johnson doubled for the Warriors. Crimson Cliffs took advantage of five errors by Snow Canyon defenders in the victory.

“Every time we come out here we want to make a statement,” Abbott said. “Every time we come out here we want to make sure that they know this is where we should be, this is the type of team we can be. And we’ve been showing that lately.”

In the rematch Friday night at Snow Canyon, the Warriors took a 4-2 lead after the first frame but a five-run fifth inning led the Mustangs to victory.

Jaiven Ross was the winning pitcher in the contest while Makaio Swensen took the loss for Snow Canyon.

The Warriors were led by Jake Johnson, who tripled and had an RBI. Ryder Harrison also drove in a run for Snow Canyon.

Crimson Cliffs was paced by Ty Maynard’s two RBIs. Tate Maynard and Canyon Kutch also recorded an RBI for the winners. Trey Evans and Jayz Estridge each hit a double for the Mustangs.

After the sweep Crimson Cliffs remained unbeaten at 13-0 overall and 4-0 in Region 10 play. Snow Canyon slipped to 11-5, 1-3 after the setbacks.

Desert Hills 7, Cedar 0 | Desert Hills 6, Cedar 2

The Desert Hills Thunder swept the Cedar Reds in both their meetings this week, with the Thunder earning a 7-0 shutout at home on Tuesday, then winning 6-2 at Cedar on Friday afternoon.

Due to anticipated weather conditions in Cedar City on Tuesday, the home fields were switched for both contests.

In Tuesday’s game in St. George, Karson Irvin pitched six shutout innings and picked up the win on the mound, striking out 12 batters while allowing just one hit and no walks. Reliever Landon Musgrave threw one more shutout inning in the seventh.

Then, on Friday, it was Irvin’s turn to shine at the plate. He led the Thunder offensively by going 3-for-3 and scoring three runs. Teammates Andrew Wilson and Taylor Mosher each knocked in a pair of runs for Desert Hills, which broke open a tight 1-1 contest by scoring four runs in the top of the third inning.

Starting pitcher Payton Gubler got the win on the mound, striking out 13 batters and allowing just one earned run. Cedar’s Kas’n Crandall was the losing pitcher.

Dixie 5, Pine View 0 | Dixie 10, Pine View 0

Malcolm Bartholomew pitched a shutout, scattering four hits, to lead the Flyers to victory at Pine View Tuesday night. Brock Roundy took the loss for the Panthers.

Logan Leavitt doubled and drove in two RBIs to lead Dixie at the plate. Jayden Davis also had two RBIs and Blake Watson drove in the fifth Flyers tally.

In the rematch at Dixie Friday night, the Flyers completed the sweep with another shutout, 10-0. Cayson Bell was the winning pitcher for Dixie. 

Five different Flyers had at least one RBI in the game, led by two RBIs each from Boston Vest, Blake Watson and Shea Anderson. Vest recorded a homerun in the win.
