What’s on the Menu: Charred Local Grill

ST. GEORGE — Southern Utah is famous for food trucks, and sometimes the best food in town comes from a food truck.

In this week’s episode of “What’s on the Menu,” host Sheldon Demke host took his friend and coworker Sydnee Imlay to check out one of St. George’s newest food trucks, Charred Local Grill.

Owner Natalie Houseberg hit the road in her barbecue-on-wheels, nicknamed “Charrlee,” about six months ago. She puts her heart and soul into the menu, and it shows.

“Some of my favorite food, my favorite recipes have always come from the barbecue,” she said. “I wanted to bring that to Southern Utah.”

The hungry duo started with the pepper bacon burger. Houseberg fired up her grill and charred a pair of perfectly seasoned beef patties just right. Then, she added cheese, black pepper bacon and pickled jalapeños.

Next up, the Baja chicken sandwich. Take fresh grilled chicken, add cheese, broil it, add pepper bacon and ranch dressing and then put it all between two toasted brioche buns. Imlay said it was one of the best chicken sandwiches she’s ever tasted, and she’s definitely coming back for more.

“This was spectacular,” Demke added. “Perfectly peppered, perfectly seasoned, and the sauces. The sauces are just – ah! – it melts.”

They finished lunch with smothered fries drenched in cheese and fry sauce. Demke saw it on the menu and just had to try it, and he wasn’t disappointed. After all, what’s more Utah than fry sauce? Houseberg even makes a special seasoning for her fries that was inspired by the red sands surrounding St. George.
