Region 10 softball: Warriors, Thunder, Mustangs all start region play with sweeps

ST. GEORGE — Region 10 competition began this week for local high school softball teams and a trio of local clubs are starting to gather momentum.

Snow Canyon swept a two-game set from Pine View, Desert Hills took care of business in both of its games against Hurricane and Crimson Cliffs rolled to two big wins over Cedar.

Following are recaps of Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s Region 10 softball games.

Tuesday’s games

Snow Canyon 11, Pine View 1

The Warriors plated all their runs in the final three frames after the Panthers took an early 1-0 lead behind Lexie Tueller’s mammoth home run in the first inning.

“Lexie’s a really good hitter, experienced,” Pine View second-year coach Donald Glover told St. George News. “She got it going for us, I wish we could have done more.”

Pine View stayed in the game early behind strong pitching from Chaisey Milne.

“Chaisey is one of our seniors, another one of our leaders,” Glover said. “She kept us in it. We really need to limit two-out walks, two-out walks killed us. But she’s tough. She’s going to battle through anything and I’m proud of her.”

Anyssa Montano led the way for the Warriors with four RBIs. Jenna Thorkelson knocked in two runs and Emma Miller and Kennadi Gates each drove in a run for the winners.

Meanwhile, Snow Canyon pitcher Emma Daniel was a force. After yielding Tueller’s homer, Daniel did not allow another hit or run in the contest.

Four fielding errors helped the Warriors score three unearned runs.

“I told the girls that we were in it. We fought,” Glover said. “We just need to clean it up with two outs, stop throwing the ball around and be more aggressive at the plate.”

“We don’t have a lot of girls that are playing year-round, but we have a lot of girls that are willing to work hard and be tough,” he added. “I’m proud of them, they’re learning. We hung in with a good team.”
