ST. GEORGE — Region 10 high school baseball teams started head-to-head competition this week with three home-and-home series played Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Crimson Cliffs took early position on top of the region standings with two wins against Cedar, while Desert Hills, Snow Canyon, Pine View and Hurricane all posted series splits to open the season.

Following are recaps of the Region 10 opening series.

Desert Hills v. Hurricane

At Hurricane Tuesday night, the Thunder bats were booming early and often on the way to a 17-1 victory.

Desert Hills scored in each of the five innings of the game, highlighted by a six-run fourth frame.

Karson Irvin was the winning pitcher and top hitter for the Thunder with three RBIs. Landon Musgrave also had three RBIs and Andrew Wilson drove in two for the winners.

Then at Desert Hills Wednesday night, Hurricane got revenge with a 10-8 victory.

Trailing 6-2 after two innings, the Tigers scored six in the third and then plated the winning two runs in the top of the fifth frame.

Casey Robinson pitched the victory for Hurricane while Jakobe Hofer took the tough loss for Desert Hills.

Josh Wright crushed a three-run homer and Grant Scholzen hit a two-run shot to pace the Tigers to the win. Asher Christensen finished with two RBIs.

Kyler Terry’s two-run home run led the Thunder while Taylor Mosher and Jace Fillmore each had an RBI in the defeat.

Snow Canyon vs. Pine View

Both clubs won at home in the split, with the Panthers defeating the Warriors 2-1 Tuesday night at Pine View.

An old-fashioned pitchers’ duel developed as Panthers starter Brock Roundy yielded one run in the first and then shut out the Warriors the rest of the way.

Meanwhile, Ethan Anderson was just as strong on the hill for Snow Canyon, yielding the two runs off of only two Pine View hits in the tough loss.

Jake Johnson drove in the lone Warriors run.

Pine View scored its winning runs in the bottom of the fifth off of RBI’s by Brandon Roundy and Brady Barney.

Snow Canyon came back in a big way at home Wednesday night, belting out 13 hits to post a 15-0 shutout.

Eight different Warriors batters had at least one RBI in the game, led by Isaac Lyon’s home run and three RBIs. Hayden Smith and Jake Johnson each drove in two for the winners.

Lyon led the way for Snow Canyon from the mound as well, breezing through five innings of scoreless work. Pine View committed four errors in the defeat.

Crimson Cliffs v. Cedar

The Mustangs are on fire to start the season, earning back-to-back big victories over the Reds.

In Tuesday’s 18-7 victory in Cedar City, Beau Sampson was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs. Kas’n Crandall took the setback for the Reds.

Crandall and Brecken Campbell drove in two Reds runners apiece. Colter Bunnell and Braxtan Torres both had an RBI for Cedar in the defeat.

Then in Wednesday’s shutout victory in Washington, Crimson Cliffs pounded out 12 hits to beat Cedar 9-0.

Javien Ross started for the Mustangs on the hill, throwing six innings, allowing one hit and striking out nine. Petey Soto pitched the seventh frame and struck out two.

Estridge led the way this time for Crimson Cliffs at the plate, driving in three runs. West and Evans each had two RBIs. Brex Starley also recorded an RBI for the winners.
