CEDAR CITY – A 19-year-old man wanted in connection with a gang-related shooting in the Los Angeles area was taken into custody in Cedar City on Wednesday morning.

According to a Cedar City Police news release issued late Wednesday morning, the suspect, Jovani Ivan Ruvalcaba, reportedly fled from California to Cedar City after the Feb. 11 incident to avoid arrest.

“The FBI was able to track his location and coordinated efforts with our agency to effect an arrest,” the news release states.

At approximately 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with officers from Iron County Metro SWAT Team and Cedar City Police Department, went to an apartment building near 900 South and 25 East in Cedar City, where Ruvalcaba reportedly had been staying.

After first deploying a “flash-bang” distraction device, the agents announced for Ruvalcaba to come out. He then exited the residence and was arrested without incident.

“We appreciate this coordinated and collaborative effort with our federal law enforcement partners to ensure public safety and remove violent offenders from our community,” the police department’s statement added.

Ruvalcaba is expected to be extradited to Los Angeles to face homicide charges and other unspecified charges.
