The goal at Desert Canyon Pharmacy is to improve patient quality of life and provide fast, friendly service. Travis Jackman, owner and primary pharmacist, said Desert Canyon opened its doors last December. He chose the location on E. Brigham Road to serve the southern end of St. George, which he said he found lacking in pharmacy options despite booming growth.

Jackman has lived in Washington County for 20 years, and he worked for various pharmacy chains before starting his own business. His philosophy is that customers deserve better than “take your pills and go.”

Patients aren’t always finding success with one-size-fits-all medications provided by drug companies, Jackman said, and physicians seldom have the time to answer specific questions or help patients navigate potential drug interactions. This is where a local pharmacy becomes invaluable.

“We call that ‘pharmaceutical care,’ and that’s what I felt was missing from regular pharmacies,” he said. “Independent pharmacies put in the time and effort and energy involved in taking care of patients.”

Independent pharmacies also have the freedom to offer more of a whole-health approach. There are myriad over-the-counter options along with holistic therapies that patients can use to achieve greater wellness.

Desert Canyon provides immunizations, including the COVID-19 vaccine, and flu and strep testing. Patients can consult with Jackman on CBD and hemp oil products, amino acid therapy and nutrient depletion.

Many people are taking prescription drugs that deplete certain nutrients in the body, he said, but don’t realize the damage being caused. A licensed pharmacist can inform them about the vitamins or minerals they might lack and how they can replace them.

One of the biggest misconceptions patients have about independent pharmacies is that they’re more expensive, Jackman said. If they have insurance, they’ll be charged the same copay that they would anywhere else. In fact, an independent pharmacist may be able to offer generic alternatives that are less costly.

“Pharmacists are excellent at getting the correct information and keeping you informed about your health,” he said.

In a time of overburdened hospitals and understaffed medical clinics, pharmacists have become the most accessible health care provider. Patients might not be able to get a hold of a nurse or even the front office staff at their primary care doctor, but they can walk in and talk face-to-face with a trusted pharmacist at Desert Canyon.

The pharmacy also has a convenient drive-thru window and free delivery to nearby neighborhoods.

While many drugstore chains are being plagued by staffing shortages and extended wait times, Desert Canyon is far more efficient. Jackman employs skilled pharmacy techs that work side by side with him to find answers and solutions for their customers.

“We’ll spend the time with you that other places don’t,” he said. “Your experience at Desert Canyon won’t be like any other pharmacy experience you’ve ever had.”

Stop by and see the difference for yourself during Desert Canyon’s grand opening event Friday. There will be a live broadcast with 99.9 KONY Country from 2-4 p.m. with food courtesy of Domino’s Pizza and Snelgrove Ice Cream.
