CEDAR CITY — A man who was arrested following a disturbance at a Brian Head hotel in late December has been sentenced to six months in jail and three years probation in connection with the case.
Jason Andrew Estes, 34, was sentenced Tuesday by 5th District Judge Matthew L. Bell after pleading guilty to aggravated assault and criminal mischief involving property damage, both third-degree felonies.
In exchange for Estes’ guilty plea, three misdemeanor counts were dismissed: unlawful detention, interfering with an arresting officer and intoxication.
As previously reported in Cedar City News, Estes was arrested the afternoon of Dec. 29 after a two-hour standoff during which he barricaded himself in a room at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Brian Head
The incident, which prompted a SWAT team response along with the temporary evacuation of part of the hotel, was eventually resolved, with no other injuries reported except the few minor self-inflicted injuries that Estes sustained.
At Tuesday’s sentencing hearing, Estes was ordered to spend 180 days in jail, with credit given for time already served. The judge suspended any additional prison time but ordered Estes to be placed on 36 months of supervised probation,
The court also waived $18,000 of the more than $19,000 in Estes’ fines and fees, leaving him responsible for $1,106, payable in monthly installments of $50.
