CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — When it comes to treatment for substance abuse, getting off drugs and alcohol is only the first step. Lasting sobriety is rarely achieved without additional support for mental health. Hope Rising Detox & Rehabilitation provides a full spectrum of services to help clients find success in recovery and stay clean.

Hope Rising has emerged as a leader in comprehensive substance abuse and mental health services in Southern Utah. Their mental health team is led by Lori Mayfield, a nurse practitioner who holds a doctorate in nursing practice specializing in psychopharmacology.

Addiction and mental illness often go hand-in-hand, and many addicts use drugs and alcohol to cope with undiagnosed or untreated mental health disorders. At Hope Rising, clients receive the medications they need to remain stable and focused on their recovery.

“Evidence-based practice shows that treating both concurrently produces the best results,” Mayfield said.

When clients arrive at Hope Rising, the staff conducts a mental health intake to help determine if they’re suffering from depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, insomnia or another disorder. Often, therapy alone isn’t enough, so clients will be prescribed mental health medications as needed while they’re participating in the recovery program.

Hope Rising is the only substance abuse treatment center in Southern Utah offering medication management. Even after clients graduate from the recovery program and return home or seek additional treatment elsewhere, they can continue seeing Mayfield and her staff for their mental health needs.

“When you’re dealing with mental health, it’s often difficult to establish a relationship and to tell your story,” she said. “So there’s a trust and comfort level there that keeps them engaged in their mental health recovery as well.”

Furthermore, anyone in the community can visit Hope Rising for mental health services, including medication management. They don’t need to be enrolled in a recovery program.

Hope Rising started providing medication management last summer with the opening of their outpatient facility in St. George. So far, Mayfield said that the addition of mental health services has boosted engagement and longevity in the recovery program. For many clients, there’s a sense of relief to have finally identified the underlying issues that may have been driving them to self-medicate.

Hope Rising also operates residential facilities for detox and inpatient treatment in Hurricane and New Harmony. The Mayfield family created Hope Rising after witnessing their daughter experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms and isolation in cold, clinical detox facilities while battling heroin addiction. They were inspired to make treatment for substance use disorder a more comfortable process by offering a home-like environment with doctors on staff.

Hope Rising offers medication-assisted treatment that helps minimize the effects of withdrawal along with reducing substance cravings early in recovery. Each client’s care needs are unique, and the treatment program may last anywhere from a few months to a couple of years. Mayfield said medication-assisted treatment can be a saving grace for people that have tried other recovery programs without success.

Life after addiction begins at Hope Rising. The caring and highly trained staff – many of whom are in long-term recovery themselves – spend individual time with each client to encourage, support and assist them without judgement as they start their recovery journey.

Hope Rising’s motto is ‘Find Your Family,’ which Mayfield explained is three-pronged. First, they help people find family members lost in addiction. When clients enter their program, they will find a family in the staff members. And once they complete treatment, they’re able to find their own families again.

“We take care of the entire person, not just the addiction,” she said. “We’re going to love them through it.”

Even when it seems all hope is lost, it’s not too late to step out of the darkness of addiction and into the light of recovery. Breaking the shackles of drug and alcohol abuse and finding purpose again is possible with the help of the compassionate staff at Hope Rising.
