CEDAR CITY — Two unrelated crashes less than one hour apart left three vehicles totaled on Cedar City’s Main Street on Thursday afternoon.

The first incident, which occurred at the intersection of 300 West and Main Street (at approximately 750 South) at approximately 3:15 p.m., involved a gray Kawasaki motorcycle and a black Mazda sedan.

Cedar City Police Sgt. Justin Ludlow said the motorcyclist was heading northbound on Main Street when the Mazda driver attempted to turn left onto southbound Main. The bike then collided with the driver’s side of the car in T-bone fashion, he said.

“More than likely, he (the bike rider) was driving too fast, but we just don’t know yet,” Ludlow said, adding that the crash was still under investigation.

Ludlow said the motorcyclist was transported via ambulance to Cedar City Hospital for treatment, but added that the man’s injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

“He had his helmet on and the helmet’s still intact. He’s probably going to be OK,” Ludlow said.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Mazda was not seriously injured. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were towed from the scene.

Then, just as that scene was wrapping up, a separate incident occurred just after 4 p.m. a few blocks to the north at the intersection of Main and Center streets.

In that crash, a white GMC Sierra pickup truck that had been heading south on Main and whose driver may have been attempting to turn left, instead continued through the intersection and struck the side of the Zions Bank building.

The crash, which did not involve any other vehicles, appears to have been caused by the driver experiencing some sort of medical emergency, possibly a seizure, Ludlow told Cedar City News at the scene.

The man, who was evaluated by Gold Cross Ambulance personnel at the scene, did not appear to be seriously injured, Ludlow added.

The truck, however, sustained heavy front-end damage and needed to be towed. There appeared to be very little structural damage to the building itself.

Traffic along Main Street was moderately impacted in the first crash, with several emergency vehicles occupying the center lane of the roadway while the scene was investigated and cleared. The second incident didn’t affect passing traffic as much, since the truck ended up several feet off the road.

Updated Feb. 4, 12:10 a.m. to reflect the correct address of the first crash. It was approximately a half block north of 800 South.
