Southern Utah high school teams in 1A/2A/3A classifications gearing up for postseason

CEDAR CITY — Post-season excitement awaits as the winter high sports seasons wind to a close for Southern Utah high schools in the 3A, 2A and 1A classifications. Following are short recaps of the teams to watch during the upcoming state playoffs, meets and championship tournaments.

3A swimming

The Canyon View High School boys won the Region 12 championship held at Richfield on Jan. 27. Meanwhile, the Canyon View girls team placed third at the same meet.

Among the top highlights, Canyon View senior Max Cannon won both of his individual events. The BYU commit won the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1:58.93 and the 500 free in a time of 4:53.32. Cannon also helped the Falcons to two of their three wins in the relay events.

Also for the Falcons, Jacob Grimshaw placed first in the 200 free and second in the 100 free, while Ryen Bailey took second in the 50 free and third in the 100 fly.

The Canyon View boys amassed a total of 469 team points during the meet, while Carbon was a distant second with 318 points.

For the Canyon View High School girls, Kylie Reynolds and Addison Taylor each won both of their individual races. Reynolds won the 100 breast in 1:10.96 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:29.05. Taylor won the 100 fly in 1:04.55 and the 100 free in 59.16. Also for the Falcons, Riley Rushton won the 500 free and took fifth in the 200 IM.

Next up will be the state meet Feb. 11-12 at Brigham Young University in Provo. The 3A and 4A meets are both being held those same two days at BYU, with the 3A taking place in the morning and early afternoon both days and the 4A happening in the evening. 3A drill

3A boys basketball

As of Monday, Canyon View boys are 3-1 in Region 12 play, 6-12 overall, putting them second in the region standings and 16th in the statewide RPI rankings for the 3A classification. The Falcons have four more region games left on their schedule, which ends with a road game against Grand County High at Moab on Feb. 11. The first two playoff rounds will be played on Feb. 16 and Feb. 19 at the home sites of the higher-seeded teams, followed by the 3A state tournament on Feb. 24-26 at Weber State University in Ogden.

3A girls basketball

The Canyon View girls basketball team is currently 0-4 in Region 12, 6-10 overall. The Falcons are ranked 13th in the RPI. They have two more region games scheduled, ending with a home game on Feb. 10 vs. Richfield. Like the 3A boys, the girls will also play the first two single-elimination playoff rounds at home sites, followed by the state tournament finals at Weber State from Feb. 24-26.

3A wrestling

The Canyon View boys and girls wrestling teams will be competing in the 3A divisionals on Friday and Saturday at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield. The 3A boys tournament will be held at that same venue on Feb. 16-17, along with the combined tournament for the 1A/2A/3A girls.

2A boys basketball

In Southern Utah’s Region 19, the Parowan Rams are currently 6-1 in region play, 11-6 overall. The Rams are ranked No. 4 in the RPI for 2A boys, while region rival Enterprise (4-3, 13-5) is ranked No. 2. 

Parowan defeated Enterprise 46-44 at Parowan on Jan. 14; the two teams will face each other again in a rematch at Enterprise on Friday.

Parowan will end its regular season at Beaver on Feb. 11, while Enterprise wraps up its region slate that same evening at South Sevier.

The first two rounds of the playoffs will be on Feb. 16 and Feb. 19 at the home sites of the higher-seeded teams, followed by the 2A state tournament, scheduled for Feb. 24-26 at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.

2A girls basketball

The Beaver Beavers are undefeated in Region 19 play with a 7-0 record, 14-2 overall. They are ranked No. 3 in the statewide RPI, behind Region 16’s Millard (17-2), which is ranked No. 1, and Region 19’s Kanab (5-1, 14-3). 

Beaver defeated Kanab 41-36 at Kanab on Jan. 13; the two teams will face each other in a rematch at Beaver on Thursday. Beaver’s last regular season game is at Parowan on Feb. 10, while Kanab wraps its region schedule the following night at San Juan High in Blanding. 

The 2A girls playoff schedule is the same as that of the 2A boys: first two rounds at home sites on Feb. 16 and Feb. 19, with the eight remaining teams going to the state tournament in Richfield from Feb. 24-26.

2A wrestling

Divisional champions Millard and Beaver are among the top teams scheduled to compete at the 2A boys state wrestling tournament, scheduled for Feb. 11-12 at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.  The girls divisionals for both 1A and 2A classifications are this Friday and Saturday at Richfield. The combined state tournament for 1A/2A/3A girls will then be staged at the Sevier Valley Center on Feb. 16-17.

1A wrestling

The Panguitch boys were the runaway winners of the divisional tournament held in Tropic last Friday and Saturday. Meanwhile, Monticello won the other 1A divisional in Milford that same weekend.

Panguitch, which qualified a whopping 26 athletes for state, will be aiming for its third straight state title at the 1A state championships scheduled for Feb. 11-12 at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.  

Meanwhile, the girls divisionals for both 1A and 2A classifications are this Friday and Saturday at Richfield. The combined state tournament for 1A/2A/3A girls will then be at the Sevier Valley Center on Feb. 16-17.

1A boys basketball

The defending state 1A champion Panguitch Bobcats have an undefeated 7-0 record in Region 20 play, 17-1 overall. They are ranked No. 1 in the statewide 1A boys RPI, while region rival Piute (4-1, 11-2) is ranked second and Diamond Ranch is third.

The Bobcats have three more regular season games left, with the last one being on Feb. 9 at home against Diamond Ranch. Panguitch will then host the Region 20 tournament before heading to Richfield for the state 1A tournament at the Sevier Valley Center from March 2-5.

1A girls basketball

Piute, the defending state champions, are 6-0 in Region 20, 15-1 overall and ranked No. 1 in the RPI. Meanwhile, region rival Panguitch (5-1, 12-4) is ranked No. 3 in the RPI.

Piute has beaten the Bobcats in both of their meetings this season, most recently by a score of 35-23 at Piute last Thursday.

The Thunderbirds will wrap up their regular season at Wayne on Feb. 9. The Region 20 tournament is in Panguitch the weekend of Feb. 18-19. That will be followed by the state 1A tournament in Richfield from March 2-5.
