CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — The innerspring mattress first hit the market in the 1870s; however, hopefully your bed isn’t that old, and the quest for better sleep – and more of it – has persisted through the generations.

Great sleep tonight can lead to better health tomorrow. As Southern Utah’s sleep specialists since 2008, the experts at Best Mattress are dedicated to helping customers achieve the deeply restorative rest they’ve been dreaming about.

“Every mattress will feel different to every customer with everyone being so different,” general manager Joe Graziano said. “That’s why it’s so important to have many choices in size, firmness and features.”

Time for an upgrade?

Sleep accounts for approximately one-third of the average person’s life span. With so much time spent in bed, buying a mattress means investing in a product that can make or break your health.

Most mattresses are engineered for about eight to 10 years of regular use. Impressions and sagging are obvious signs that a bed is past its expiration date. But even if nothing is visible on the surface, it may be time for a replacement if you’re no longer enjoying the same quality of sleep that you used to.

“The right mattress has such an impact on your sleep,” Graziano said. “But not only that, it has a huge impact on how you work, play and feel the next day.”

Protect your investment

As the years go by, mattresses grow heavier as they absorb moisture, dead skin cells and pests. Graziano said a bed can double in weight over the course of a decade and pick up as many as 10 million dust mites. Most of this weight gain can be prevented by purchasing a waterproof yet breathable mattress protector when the bed is brand new and keeping it covered.

“A lot of people wake up with allergies every morning, and in a lot of cases it’s from dust mites,” he added. “Mattresses not only lose their support and comfort over time, but also can become unhealthy for you to sleep on.”

A mattress protector serves as the first line of defense against sweat, spills and bed bugs. Covers also cut down on dust, pet dander and other debris for the benefit of sleepers with asthma or allergies. Mattress protectors should be washed regularly for hygienic purposes, though not as often as sheets.

Technology marches on

Mattresses have come a long way from the box springs of the past. Today’s beds are built to adapt to your body – not the other way around. More than ever, manufacturers are implementing technology to enhance support, comfort and durability for the ultimate sleep experience.

With so many options available, advancements in technology continue to revolutionize both the way we sleep and how we shop for mattresses. Still, Graziano said there’s no substitute for trying out beds in a showroom. He recommends spending 10-15 minutes on each mattress checking the support and exploring pressure points, especially in your natural sleep position.
