Will Southern Utah see a white Christmas this year?

ST. GEORGE — Even though “White Christmas” just closed at the St. George Musical Theater, there may be an opening for some of the real white stuff for the holiday in Southern Utah.

Though there is more of a possibility of it being a wet Christmas this year for much of Southern Utah.

As of Tuesday, the National Weather Service said the forecast for Christmas Day from the Utah Port of Call to Beaver is for a strong chance for precipitation. And for some locations, it truly will be a white Christmas.

“A storm is coming starting Thursday through Saturday and it’s definitely a pretty moist storm system,” Linda Cheng, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Salt Lake City office, told St. George News.

There is a 50% chance of precipitation in St. George on Thursday, growing to 80% by Christmas Eve Day and continuing on through Saturday.

But Cheng said the notorious, mythical weather bubble that seems to keep the St. George area free of the snowflakes that fall just a little further north will likely hold steady.

“It’s a mild weather mass, so in St. George, it’s going to stay as rain,” Cheng said.

Going further north to Cedar City, however, there might be cause to break out the sounds of Bing Crosby.

It’s going to be close,” Cheng said of the chance of a snowy holiday in the Cedar City area. “The storm is going to start as kind of rain and gradually become snow. It just doesn’t look like a whole lot.

If someone wants to really see snow falling, Cheng said the Pine Mountains and Brian Head will be the place to be.

“Brian Head is going to get a little over a foot of snow Thursday through Friday, but as far as the valley if they get something, it will be less than an inch.”
