Busy morning for crashes at Dixie and Sunset in St. George

ST. GEORGE — St. George Police and first responders spent a great deal of time at the corner of Dixie Downs Road and Sunset Boulevard on Friday morning with two separate car crashes within two hours of each other.

The second incident left one man injured and disrupted the midday commute in the area.

Just past the corner with Sunset on the northbound side of Dixie Downs, and along with a Gold Cross ambulance and St. George Police and Fire vehicles, was a red sports car sitting in the left lane with damage on the right front passenger side.

Further down Dixie Downs was the other vehicle involved in the two-car crash that occurred close to 11:30 a.m., a silver Honda Odyssey with damage and scrapes of red paint along the front driver’s side of the vehicle.

In front of all of that, parked at the Maverik gas station was a white Volkswagen Passat that was involved in a two-car crash that happened at the same corner two hours earlier around 9:30 a.m.

The corner of Dixie and Sunset is a common site of car collisions, and St. George Police Officer Burkeley Christian said a little more patience by drivers could go a long way.

“I think just during the busier time of day, just make sure you’re slowing down, looking around, make sure you’re not distracted by anything …  not to get impatient.”

Christian said in the second incident, the silver Odyssey with a female driver as a sole occupant was leaving the Maverik to make a right turn onto Dixie Downs.

“The red passenger car was in the inside lane going northbound. The Honda Odyssey made a lane change to try to go into Lin’s and just didn’t see that car next to her when she changed lanes and they collided,” Christian said.

The male driver of the red sports car was treated at the scene in the ambulance for what Christian said was a minor head injury. The uninjured driver of the minivan was cited for an improper lane change.
