‘Speed is almost always a factor’: 2 transported to hospital after collision off I-15 in Washington City

WASHINGTON CITYA red Nissan Xterra exiting southbound Interstate 15 towing a small camp trailer on Sunday evening collided with a blue Chevy Cruze traveling north on Green Spring Drive and resulting in two people being transported to the hospital.

Washington City Police Lt. Kory Klotz said the speed of the collision, which happened at around 5:50 p.m., caused the trailer to spin and pull the Nissan farther into the intersection, hitting a third car – a Hyundai Sonata – traveling south on Green Spring Drive.

“As the Xterra was coming down, it was going towards the stop sign and either the driver didn’t realize there was a stop sign or he just lost control of the vehicle,” Klotz said. “He basically T-boned the Chevy Cruze on the passenger side, and that caused the trailer to spin around and hit another vehicle going southbound so it kind of traveled some distance.”

The greatest damage was done to the first two vehicles, while the Hyundai Sonata only sustained minor damage to its exterior. The two men inside the Hyundai escaped serious injury, Klotz said, and were able to drive the vehicle from the scene.

Paramedics with Gold Cross Ambulance assessed the injuries of the drivers and sole occupants in the Xterra and Cruze, ultimately transporting each to St. George Regional Hospital.

“The driver of the Chevy Cruze, an adult male, was transported for a possible concussion,” Klotz said. “The driver of the Xterra was an older male, and he was transported with some scrapes and possible abrasions as a precaution. It looks like they’re both stable now.”

A citation or any charges as a result of the crash are still pending further investigation, though Klotz said the driver of the Xterra will likely be cited for failing to stop at a stop sign. Police and paramedics were assisted at the scene by the Washington City Fire Department.

While the intersection of Green Spring Drive and Telegraph Street just south of the crash is fairly accident-prone, the scene of Sunday’s incident was somewhat unusual, Klotz said. He offered some tips to help avoid future crashes in similar circumstances.

“In low light conditions just slow down a little bit and try to be extra vigilant,” Klotz said. “Speed is almost always a factor in these crashes, so we just need to slow down and be patient. And when there’s a trailer involved, your stopping distance needs to be longer.”
