Vista Medical Center, a state-of-the-art facility located at 2891 E. Mall Drive, is now open and  provides a new home for the Best of Southern Utah 2021 gold award winner for best chiropractic office. Under the direction of Dr. Russell Jepson, they have also added a new provider to their staff: physical therapist Dr. Tyson Winder.

These providers offer the most comprehensive treatments in sports injuries, auto injuries, severe back pain and disc injuries. Their treatments focus on restoring optimal balance, proper biomechanics and removing pain with a variety of techniques.

They use gentle chiropractic adjustments and physical therapy manipulations when needed as well as advanced therapeutic exercises, several muscle release techniques, ultrasound therapy, massage therapy, dry needling, blood flow restriction therapy, electric muscle stimulation, cupping, spinal disc decompression therapy and the new extracorporeal shockwave therapy.

What is shockwave therapy and how does it work?

Shockwave therapy is an evidence-based, emerging, proven treatment option for patients suffering from both acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries. If you’re tired of being in pain and unable to participate in activities you love, this could be right for you. This treatment option is found all over Europe, in most major hospitals and with most professional sports teams. Vista Healthcare is excited to bring this treatment option to St. George.

The treatment uses acoustic pressure waves to safely increase metabolism and blood flow, stimulating or enhancing healing of the injury. The microtrauma induced triggers a cascade of inflammatory factors that help regenerate the damaged tissue. These inflammatory factors are essential for healing and are present at high levels in acute injuries but diminish or cease to exist over time in chronic injuries.

Think of shockwave therapy as a way of pushing the reset button on healing. Treatments are geared towards tendonitis, bursitis, trigger points, neck pain, back pain, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, heel and Achilles pain and plantar fasciitis.

Who is a candidate for this technology, and what should you expect?

Vista Healthcare recommends treatment for acute injuries as part of first-line therapy, since it will allow for a faster recovery so that you can return to the activities you love. It’s also recommended for patients with chronic injuries who have failed to respond to other therapies. Shockwave therapy allows patients to avoid major downtime during treatment.

Treatment is performed in the office and usually consists of four sessions on a weekly basis. Patients with more chronic injuries may require a fifth or sixth treatment. Each visit lasts approximately 20 minutes. Patients may begin to see immediate improvement, but significant improvement is noted four weeks after the last treatment. More improvement often occurs eight to 12 weeks after the last treatment. Over 80% of patients see significant or complete resolution of symptoms.

Shockwave therapy is a cash-pay service. It is not covered by insurance.
