Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Grant Hintze said the car was heading north about 8:30 a.m. on I-15 at mile marker 35 when the driver fell asleep, rolling the car once and ending up facing south. All three occupants were wearing seatbelts.

The 25-year-old passenger had severe lacerations from the shattered window and a deep gash on his wrist. He had been sitting behind the driver.

“They were lucky an off-duty officer and a doctor were driving behind them,” Hintze said. “They made a tourniquet. There was significant bleeding. I’m pretty sure they saved his arm.”

The driver and front-seat passenger complained of neck pain while the third may need surgery on his wrist, Hintze said. The men were transported to St. George Regional Hospital.

Responding agencies included the Utah Highway Patrol, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and Hurricane Valley Fire District.
