CEDAR CITY — Cedar High School hosted its first home swim meet of the season last weekend, with the Reds taking second overall in the girls portion of the meet and third in the boys.
A total of 12 schools participated, including 6A powerhouse Pleasant Grove, which took first place in both the girls and boys meets. Joining host team Cedar from Southern Utah were Region 10 rivals Crimson Cliffs and Pine View, in addition to in-town rival Canyon View.
Abby Stratton of Cedar, a senior who recently signed a letter of intent to swim for University of Nebraska at Kearney, placed second in the 200 free with a time of 2:10.47. She also took second in the 500 free with a time of 5:55.63.
Aspen Simper of Cedar won the 50 free, beating more than 100 other competitors with a time of 26.27 seconds. She also won the 500 free in a time of 5:43.47.
Kensley Messinger of Crimson Cliffs placed second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:29.04. She also placed second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:15.33.
Sydney Selinger of Cedar won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:06.14, while her sophomore teammate Olivia Price tied for second place in the 100 free with a time of 59.54. Hannah Edwards of Cedar placed third in the 100 back with a time of 1:06.98.
Edwards, Stratton, Price and Simper also powered the Reds to a first-place finish in the last race of the meet, the 400 free relay. Their winning time was 3:56.41, more than seven seconds ahead of runner-up Davis High.
For the boys, Tanner Dodds of Cedar won the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.65. Jacob Grimshaw of Canyon View won the 500 free in a time of 5:21.43.
Also, Crimson Cliffs sophomore Josh Walker took second place in the 50 free with a time of 23.01. Senior Tobler Dotson of Cedar placed third in the same race with a time of 23.22.
Dotson won the 100 fly in a time of 54.40, edging Canyon View’s Max Cannon, who placed second with a time of 56.01. Cannon, however, later won the 100 breast with a time of 1:01.23.
Cedar High’s boys won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:45.54, while Canyon View won the 200 free relay in 1:32.88. In the 400 free relay at the end of the meet on Saturday, Cedar placed first, Canyon View took second and Crimson Cliffs finished third.

The next major local high school meet will be the Canyon View Invitational taking place at Southern Utah University in Cedar City on Dec. 3-4.
