ST. GEORGE — MVP Julia Jacobsen of Desert Hills leads the newly selected all-region volleyball team, as chosen by the Region 10 coaches.

Jacobsen, a 6-foot senior middle and outside hitter, helped lead the Thunder to an 11-1 region record and the Region 10 title followed by a second-place finish at the recent 4A state tournament.

Desert Hills head coach Craig Allred called Jacobsen “one of the best athletes I have coached – and even a better person.”

“Julia is an absolutely amazing kid,” Allred told St. George News. “She is such a great leader both on the court and off. She was the one leading cheers during the freshmen and sophomores matches. In fact, some of her favorite memories are cheering those teams on. Then, when it comes her time to play, she leads by example, whether that is in practice or in the match. She sets the tone and the standard for all players.”

During Jacobsen’s four years at Desert Hills, the Thunder won the region title four times and placed runner-up at state twice, Allred noted.

“She truly left a huge impact on the school,” he said.

In addition to Jacobsen, Allen said Desert Hills had several other key seniors on its roster this year, including Sa’de Turlington, McKayla Allred, Maleia Thurber and Brooke Haguewood.

“They have been great seniors for our program,” he said. “Our team this year was so fun for us to coach. They played their best when they were having fun and with their team-first attitudes were able to accomplish some pretty amazing things this year.”
