Authorities release name of St. George man found dead in detention cell; investigation ongoing

ST. GEORGE —In a press release issued Thursday, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office released the name of a St. George man who was found dead in a detention cell on Monday.

Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Detectives are continuing their investigation into an in-custody death that occurred at the Adult Detention Facility in Kingman, Arizona.

According to the news release, at 11:05 p.m. on Monday, detention staff observed an inmate hanging in his cell. Detention officers immediately intervened and began life-saving measures while calling for emergency medical services to respond to the facility. The man was transported to Kingman Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at approximately 12:03 a.m., the release states. 

The inmate has been identified as Mark Alan Sweat, 66 of St. George, Utah.

Authorities say Sweat was booked into the county jail in September 2021 for two counts of felony sexual assault and had recently been sentenced to 21 years in the Arizona Department of Corrections. Sweat was housed in a single-person cell.

While there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, the investigation is ongoing.
