ST. GEORGE — Three drivers escaped serious injury when a motorist on state Route 9 reportedly turned into oncoming traffic and was struck by two vehicles in the middle of a Hurricane intersection on Wednesday.
Shortly after 7:30 a.m., officers and emergency personnel responded to the intersection of SR-9 and South 700 West on a three-vehicle crash involving a dark gray Buick, a black two-door Nissan and a black Nissan four-door passenger car.
Officers arrived to find the Buick smashed into the landscaping after striking a light pole, while the two Nissans were heavily damaged and partially blocking both eastbound lanes of the highway. Additional officers were called to the scene to divert traffic around the crash.
Hurricane Police Officer Dan Radditz told St. George News the driver in the Buick sustained minor injuries and was transported to St. George Regional Hospital to be evaluated, primarily as a precaution, he added.
Radditz said the two remaining drivers did not report any injuries at the scene.
At the time of the crash, the Buick, heading west on SR-9, approached the intersection to make a left turn onto 700 West to head south as the traffic light turned yellow, Radditz said. At the same time, the two Nissans were heading east and as both continued through the intersection, the driver of the Buick turned into oncoming traffic and was struck by both vehicles, he added.
“At the scene, it appeared that all three vehicles were trying to get through that yellow light,” Radditz said.
The airbags in two of the vehicles deployed upon impact and all three cars were heavily damaged and subsequently towed from the scene.
Radditz also said that considering the severity of the crash and damage that followed, it was fortunate that only one of the drivers was transported with minor injuries.
The driver of the Buick will be cited for failing to yield on a left-hand turn, the officer said. The Hurricane Police Department, Hurricane Fire and Rescue responded and tended to the scene.
