4A football playoffs begin Friday for 4 Region 9 schools, while 4 others have byes

ST. GEORGE — Half of Region 9’s eight high school football teams start post-season play Friday, as the 4A state playoffs get underway.

The other four teams have byes this week and will begin playing in the second round next week. Following is a peek at Friday’s three scheduled games involving Region 9 teams.

 

Mountain Crest at Desert Hills, 4 p.m.

The 16th-seeded Desert Hills Thunder (4-6 overall) is hosting the 17th-seeded Mountain Crest Mustangs (2-8). The two teams last met in the first round on that same field two years ago, when the Mustangs won 31-24. The winner of Friday’s game plays top-seeded Sky View at Sky View High in Smithfield on Oct. 30.

Hurricane at Logan, 5 p.m.

The 19th-seeded Hurricane Tigers (2-8 overall) are traveling to Logan to take on the Grizzlies (3-6). The winner of the game will advance to play No. 3 seed Snow Canyon in St. George on Oct. 30.

Canyon View at Crimson Cliffs, 7 p.m.

In a matchup between region rivals, the 15th-seeded Crimson Cliffs Mustangs (3-6) are hosting the 18th-seeded Canyon View Falcons (3-7). In their regular season contest played at Canyon View on Sept. 11, the Mustangs won 40-7. The winner of Friday’s game advances to play Pine View, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, at Pine View on Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. 

Also on Oct. 30, the ninth-seeded Dixie Flyers will travel to Cedar City to play the eighth-seeded Cedar Reds at 6 p.m. In their regular-season meeting at Dixie on Sept. 18, the Flyers edged Cedar 24-19.
