MOAB — A 23-year-old skydiver died Sunday afternoon when he “experienced a fast and hard landing” in the landing zone at Canyonlands Field Airport north of Moab, authorities said.

According to a news release posted on Facebook Sunday evening by Grand County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 2 p.m.

“The skydiver suffered fatal injuries as a result of that landing,” the release stated, identifying the man as Spencer Connolley of Moab.

Several of Connelley’s friends and fellow skydivers have since posted tributes and memories on his Facebook page.

Lt. Kim Neal of the Sheriff’s Office told St. George News Monday that weather conditions were favorable at the time of the incident.

“The weather at the time of the accident was a light wind of approximately 4 knots (5 mph) from the west. The temperature was 98 degrees,” Neal said, adding, “The weather does not appear to have been a factor in this accident.”

The news release said the accident is currently under investigation by the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.
