3-vehicle crash at River Road and Brigham Road injures 1, causes traffic delays

ST. GEORGE — A collision at the intersection of Brigham Road and River Road shortly before noon Monday sent one driver to the hospital and caused traffic delays for approximately one hour.

St. George Police Sgt. Tyrell Bangerter said the driver of a Chevrolet pickup truck that had been heading north on River Road was turning left onto Brigham Road when it was struck by a southbound semitractor truck hauling two large trailers.

“He made a left-hand turn in front of the semi,” Bangerter told St. George News at the scene. “The driver of the semi truck tried to avoid it. He hit the brakes and swerved a little bit to the right, but he did hit the Chevy pickup.”

The force of the impact spun the Chevrolet pickup around so that it ended up facing the opposite direction, its front end badly damaged.

After being evaluated by medical personnel at the scene, the adult male driver of the Chevrolet was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center by ambulance for further treatment.

“He was transported to the hospital after complaining of head pain,” Bangerter said, adding that the man was conscious, alert and talking to police and responders at the scene.

The Chevrolet driver was cited for failure to yield, along with a registration violation, police said.

A third vehicle was also involved, as the semi made contact with a white Ford pickup that was stopped at the corner on Brigham Road, waiting to turn right to go south, Bangerter noted.

Neither the male semi driver nor the female driver of the Ford reported any injuries, he said.

Damage to the Ford was minimal, and the vehicle was still operable. A tow truck was used to temporarily move it out of the way so that the semi’s trailers could be unhooked and moved away. Although the semi truck itself sustained significant front-end damage, its trailers did not appear to have any visible damage. Meanwhile, the Chevrolet pickup sustained heavy front-end damage and was towed from the scene.

Traffic, especially eastbound traffic waiting to turn onto southbound River Road, was delayed for nearly an hour while responders worked to clear the scene.

Crews from St. George Fire Department assisted St. George Police in directing traffic through the intersection.

“Obviously, it was blocking the road, preventing us from trying to get traffic around it,” Bangerter said. “We positioned a couple officers down here, trying to divert what traffic we could onto Bloomington Hills.”

“We appreciate everybody’s patience,” Bangerter said. “We’d just like to remind drivers anytime they’re making a left-hand turn, you’ve got to make sure you yield the right of way to the traffic that’s approaching to come through.”
